Net Interest Margins For The Country’s Largest Banks Inched Higher In Q3

Forbes, 18Nov2014, Net Interest Margins For The Country’s Largest Banks Inched Higher In Q3, here.  Let’s call it 260 bps NIM.

The table below shows the NIM figures for the five largest banks for the third quarters of each of the last four years. The figures were reported by the banks in their respective quarterly SEC filings. The weighted average figure is arrived at by weighing each bank’s interest margin for the quarter with the average interest-earning assets it reported for the period.

Q3 2011 Q3 2012 Q3 2013 Q3 2014
U.S. Bancorp 3.65% 3.59% 3.43% 3.16%
Wells Fargo 3.84% 3.66% 3.38% 3.06%
Citigroup 2.83% 2.86% 2.81% 2.91%
Bank of America 2.31% 2.31% 2.33% 2.29%
JPMorgan 2.66% 2.43% 2.18% 2.19%
Weighted Avg. 2.85% 2.77% 2.64% 2.60%
As is evident from the table, NIM figures for all the banks have fallen considerably from the highs 2011. In fact, the interest margin has seen an uptick in only 2 quarters over the 2011-2014 period – in Q4 2013 and more recently in Q3 2014. Notably, the primary reason for an improvement in both these quarters was an increase in NIM figures for Citigroup and Bank of America. While it can be argued that the NIM figures at these banks were low compared to U.S. Bancorp and Wells Fargo to begin with, it should be noted that the reason for this is the markedly different business models and capital structures for these two groups of banks.
